The web host - what are they like?

What do you think of Fasthosts?

Used them for a large period about 2 years ago.

The machine got hacked and racked up some serious bandwith which they charged us a fortune for (with little help).

On the plus side the technical support is usually pretty responsive and is all ticket based so at least things can be followed up.

Oh and they have starwars playing on their tech support queue line which you%26#039;ll get very used to.

Depends what sort of hosting your after really, if your going to pay out a reasonable amount for a service that you need to be reliable for multiple or a big site then fasthost would seem a decent choice.

Other than that if your only operating something small, give bluguy a go, ive found them very very cheap and very responsive, though i only have the one site on there.

I want to start a website that can cater for high bandwidth.

I have been told that I will need a server as most web hosts wont allow high bandwidth. My website will hopefully be as big as youtube. So the server must be capable of high bandwidth so users can upload movies and pics.

What server should i buy to start off with?

Will i need to buy my own IP address? as somone said that internet providers wont allow high bandwidth.

What you will need for starters, are sponsers, and a lot of them, because bandwith, costs lots of money.

You should do a search on how many gigs a site like youtube eats a minute/day/month...

You will be dazzled...

Then, go search for a dedicated server, wich also will cost a lot, with at least a 100Mbit connection directly to a backbone, for good steady connections. Make good agreements with the hosting company, about the costs of extra bandwith and so on, to save on troubles afterwards...

You are going to need a dedicated server, you can lease or buy them from many web hosts, and then pay very high rates for a service with high bandwidth. You can bankrupt yourself just starting something this big, so start with a normal hosting service and move the site as soon as it picks up momentum. Be aware that unless you control what is uploaded you will be targetted by the copyright protection agencies, there are sites being closed daily at the moment.

GoDaddy, RackSpace, 1%26amp;1 all offer different levels of bandwidth for varying costs.

You can always start small and as your need increases build up from there. It is common to see websites change servers/packages as they grow.

After all, can you really afford the amount of bandwidth that YouTube sucks down? No way, Jose.

You%26#039;ll need to fill an %26quot;banned%26quot; array with the range of IPs using a for statement. It%26#039;s going to be a large array. :P

Then using a DO statement you can check to see if their IP is in that list.

You know -- I haven%26#039;t programmed forever, otherwise I wouldn%26#039;t have provided a code example. But I was thinking, you can break the IP up into the first ocet. %26quot;166%26quot; and ban any or all IPs that start with 166.

Then again, Javascript banning isn%26#039;t fool proof by any means.

If so, you can create one single script that will check the IPs, You can call that script from every page on your site. And have a redirect page giving a %26quot;ban message%26quot;.

I have a free account on wordpress, and i went to themes.wordpress.org to look for some new themes to use. I downloaded one and the Wordpress 2.15 or whatever folder and unzipped the theme folder into the themes folder in the wordpress folder.

I don%26#039;t have a web host or anything like that. So do I have to pay to change my Wordpress theme (using something other than then the default ones under presentation)?

Legal: You must ensure that your models are of legal age and post a U.S. 18 2257 compliance notice on your website. If the user has to register, they register but before being granted privileages I have to validate them. The problem is that DNN doesn%26#039;t really differentiate content based on a User ID. If a user is registered, they can access any module that allows for it. You%26#039;d have to manually add them to an access list of the repository module.

You could, however, alter the repository module to display downloads based on the logged-in User.

What sort of a site is it.

A Dynamic or Static site.

If its dynamic then you got to update that perticular file. For instance a text file or so.

But static, you got to simply replace the old file with the new one. You could simply try saving it %26quot;Save as%26quot;.

Ask the server administrator if you can PUBLISH from Frontpage or if you need to upload with FTP.

I suspect if you save your website on your local disk and use an FTP program to upload to the server, it will work fine.

The selling and sentence structure are both British, but both AOL and Microsoft are American companies.

Look at the e-mail address: It%26#039;s a Yahoo! address! If there are two companies in the world that don%26#039;t need a Yahoo! e-mail address, those two are AOL and Microsoft.

As another poster noted, the country code for the telephone number should be 1 rather than 44.

The last paragraph asks you to %26quot;make contact with [YOUR] designated agent, but, whoever he is, he is THEIR agent, not MINE.

I%26#039;m looking at making a website with a members area that users would subscribe to get access to. I%26#039;ve trawled the internet and can%26#039;t find anything I like - looking for easy software to manage this for me. The sort of thing with paypal integration :D Preferably free.

With my web host, I can password protect directories, so its really just a matter of getting the usernames and passwords for the directory to people when they pay for a subscription.

Where and how do I enter this?

A Dynamic or Static site.

If its dynamic then you got to update that perticular file. For instance a text file or so.

But static, you got to simply replace the old file with the new one. You could simply try saving it %26quot;Save as%26quot;.

You may not be able to use the standard PUBLISH method in Frontpage.

Ask the server administrator if you can PUBLISH from Frontpage or if you need to upload with FTP.

I suspect if you save your website on your local disk and use an FTP program to upload to the server, it will work fine.

You can also do this directly in Frontpage, if you choose to %26quot;Publish%26quot; with ftp://www.mywebsite.example rather then http://www.mywebsite.example

Most email that people receive is spam. Never respond to those. You didnt%26#039; win $$$ or a gift certificate or merchandise. They are phishing for information or to check if your email is real. Trying to unsubscribe to some email makes them know your email is real and they will send oyu more spam.

You also have to think %26quot;How did they get my email?%26quot; Also be careful if its a bank telling you to update your account, they are trying to take you to a fake site and get you to input your information. Always be careful on the net with emails, links, attachments, people and so on. IF you didn%26#039;t go to them don%26#039;t trust them.

The first linux application is being planned for my company and it will be a web host for the company%26#039;s new online catalouge. What kinds of things will I need to know before selecting one of the linux distributions available? 閳?br>Networking with Linux??

You need to first ask if you intend to do this with X active or with a traditional safe non GUI server. Nearly all web servers are done without the X system running its simply is safer.

There are many good ways to go.

Personnally I like CentOS it is solid and secure and unless you want to use RedHat enterprise it is the close match.

You should also consider adding a control panel for your webserver like Zervex or WebMin in order to remotely access and control services, users, emails, etc.

What bandwidth is available for your system.. min. of T1 is needed to %26quot;host your own%26quot; the OUTBOUND speed being the first need because that is what will respond to your visitors.

You will need at least two IP%26#039;s for your server, one for the server and nameserver 1 and one for nameserver 2 (you can outsource the DNS but it is much better when you control it makes it easier to add additional domains.)

You do need a very complete understanding of SSH and its use as well as some solid knowledge of security monitoring and log review.

You also need to be aware of the LAWS concerning the storing of users data (if you are running a catalog!)

You will need a secure certificate and at least 128 bit SSL service running for https connections. Your Linux distro will need to support that service (most do).

You might want to get some good solid advice from someone who has this knowledge at least on a consult basis!

All that being said.. colocating or having a dedicated managed server is usually much safer for small to medium sized businesses than hosting your own! You get the benefit of a data center (with power and bandwidth backups, controled environment, 24x7 montioring, etc etc.) The cost is not that high when compared to rolling your own.

You have to realize, that especially when it comes to a server configuration... there is no difference between the distros.

You will need to customize your kernel, and I would highly recommend using SELinux to compartmentalize the OS. Don%26#039;t be one of those idiots who thinks that chroot is a security function.

Why are you going with Linux? Windows Server is far more secureable and does have a lower TCO... Have you looked into BSD as a possible option?

I would start by asking your hosting provider. They may have blog software already installed on the server that you can use for your site. If not, things may get more complicated than you%26#039;re ready for...

Are you 100% sure your hosting provider won%26#039;t let you use ftp? Frontpage is using a form of ftp to get your info up in the first place. Anyway, ftp would make things easier if your provider doesn%26#039;t have the software installed and you want full control and blog hosting for your own personal site.

Without ftp, you can run a blog on another site, including Yahoo!. There may be a way to capture the RSS feed and then display it on your site...

There are two sides to web site development, server side and client side. The server side deals with dynamic contents and real time transaction because you can interact with the database. By dynamic contents, I mean the contents on the web page can be different from person to person. Client side deals with the presentation part of the web page. If you only do client side development without the server side involvement, the contents will most likely be static, meaning that the contents are the same from person to person and the contents will only change if you (the creator) make a change to the file.

There are many technologies associating to the server side development. To name a few, JSP (Java Server Pages), ASP (Active Server Pages), ASP .NET, PHP, and ColdFusion are some of the major technologies that people use these days. When it comes to client side web site development, mainly you are dealing with HTML and some Javascript.

Having said all these, if you want web site development, you need to know whether you are dealing with both server side and client side or strictly client side. Please note that, technically speaking, all that you need is a simple text editor like NotePad to develop web sites. What the programs do for you is to give you the convenience. For client side, I find that Macromedia Dreamweaver to be pretty good. For server side, there are many programs that are specifically designed for a particular technology. Dreamweaver can do ColdFusion, JSP, ASP, ASP .NET, and PHP. Coldfusion is also a Macromedia product;so, if you are a ColdFusion developer, it would make sense for you to use Dreamweaver. However, there is an Open Source program out there called, Eclipse (go to www.eclipse.org for more info). Because it is open source, so, it is free to download. Eclipse is mainly being used for JSP development. There is also a ColdFusion version of Eclipse called, cfEclipse but I personally don%26#039;t like it very much because the tag suggestion is kind of screw up. ASP and ASP .NET are both Microsoft products. In the older days, Microsoft had a product called, Visual InterDev and that%26#039;s what Microsoft provided the developers to do ASP. With the .NET technology, Microsoft has this product called, Visual Studio, which is a suite of different products and it also has the capability for you to develop ASP and ASP .NET pages.

As far as web hosts, different web hosts support different server side technologies, the most common supported technologies are ASP, ASP .NET, CGI (Perl script), and PHP. If all that you care about is the client side web development, then every web host supports that and you may as well just use Yahoo because it is free. But if you want to do server side web development, that depends on what kind of technologies you are dealing with. Personally, since I am a certified ColdFusion MX developer, I know more about the ColdFusion related hosts. If you want ColdFusion, you can go with crystaltech.com (they provide a 50% non-profit organization discount and also different packages for developers to use their servers as testing servers), HostMySite.com (they do support ColdFusion but I wouldn%26#039;t recommend this to you because of my experience with them), or GoDaddy.com.

In terms of pricing though, GoDaddy.com offers the lowest prices by far. GoDaddy.com also supports Coldfusion, ASP, ASP.NET, and PHP. As far as I have experienced, their servers seem to be quite stable.

For your work, advertising is a big issue. You will definitely need a website - mainly for processing payments. Advertising plus web site design and programming is a big deal. It%26#039;s not my expertise, you will have to ask others what the costs will be like.

One good thing about the big company is that you can test the water without a large upfront cost. If things go well, try your own website later.

Employers Google search your name to look for incriminating evidence. I used to put artwork on various websites that are from high school level. Now, I%26#039;m looking to get into the art world professionally. First, you should find out what name is used on your web hosting as the index file. Commonly, it%26#039;s name should be: index.htm, index.html, default.htm, default.html.

If your web hosting uses any server side scripting technology, the file extension should be asp for ASP, php for PHP, and so on

When your web hosting is Apache, I think you could first try with the name index.html

I got an email from microsoft see below: and I don楹搕 know why the hell I answered them, but I followed their steps so far that I paid them 450 GBP for the transfer of the money from bank to bank. Just in that moment he rang me and I gave him the controll number, I thought that was your biggest mistake in your life. I gave them my identification, my phonenumber and they do ring, and my bankaccount details.And first then after I told them all, I searched in the internet and found out it is scam. First thing you need to do is contact your bank to notify them that you have been a victim of this scam. If you have handed over any bank details then the fraudsters may try to use your identity or clean out your account, so contact your bank NOW and, if necessary, close down your account.

Then contact the police. They may not be able to do much to get your money back right now, but again, if the fraudsters try to use your identity to write checks or get loans in your name, then you need to have a record that you reported it already.

If you are very lucky, the money won%26#039;t have been transferred from your bank right away and you might be able to stop it if you CALL THEM RIGHT NOW!

My friend is leasing his own server for the first time, and he has given me a reseller account. I would like to run a web host off of my reseller account, but the server does not have the latest version of CPanel, PHP, or MySQL, nor does it have Python installed.

I do not have admin access to the server, but my friend does. He told me that he would upgrade all of these things for me if I could find out how. So here I am!

Hey guys, I have just installed a php download script from www.rwscripts.com. My web host is netfirms.com, and I%26#039;ve set it to PHP4 (same as the php script I got). and found the FAQ from the site you got the script from:

The extension_dir setting in php.ini should point to the real directory for SourceGuardian loaders to work (as well as any other dynamic PHP extension). This may be any directory on server. Common setting is /usr/local/lib/php/extensions. Please contact your server provider about this issue. They need to create this directory and alter the setting in php.ini and then restart the webserver. %26quot;

As it states there in the wording you quoted you need to first contact your provider netfirms.com and tell them about this extension you are trying to use and tell them the message you told us here. They need to do a few things on their end with regards to this, and they may or may not want to do it. It is strictly up to their discretion.

1) They will need to alter the php.ini file. PHP.ini, if you don%26#039;t know what it is, is a file which configures the PHP interpretor.

Think of it as a file with custom settings in it that PHP uses like where uploads go, how much memory to use, which abilities should PHP have etc. One of the settings in there is extension_dir which tells PHP where to find extensions (extra feature files for connecting to databases or how to draw graphics etc).

In all likeliness they will need to modify that PHP.ini because it may effect all the other accounts they host or may just effect yours, they would know how to do that. It might be located in a folder you don%26#039;t have access to through FTP.

2) They will need to then reboot the server and might be the reason they say no to your request. PHP.ini files are read and then the settings are loaded into memory. Only way to get the server to re-read the settings again is through the reboot process. This is a standard procedure when dealing with PHP. If the server you host with is running other accounts using the same PHP, they may not want to shut down the server just for your script. Or they may wait until they have lots of changes and then reboot and make all changes at once.

3) They will have to take a look at your script to see if it might open up security problems with their current configuration and they may need to compare its expected settings to what they have on the server to see if the two are compatible.

So I recommend that you talk to netfirms.com support, tell them what you would like to do and see what they say about configuring it. Most providers will work with you and see if they can get it installed and working properly for you. If it is really important and they are not willing to cooperate, you might want to tell them you will have to take your account elsewhere then... but only use that as a last resort effort to resolve the situation.

My web host is telling me that my website is using too much memory. I did everything I can think of to bring it down, but unfortunately it%26#039;s still much higher than what%26#039;s acceptable. Any suggestions on how I can lower the memory usage of my website is welcome. BTW, my site is in PHP, content only (no chats, forums, etc). I do have Wordpress installed with a number of plugins enabled.

Make sure that all of your images are converted/scaled to a small size.

For example: If you have a picture that is 800 pixels by 600pxls and you are displaying it a 160pxls x 120pxls, shrink it down to 160pxls by 120pxls!

You don%26#039;t need high-res pictures if they don%26#039;t need to be enlarge or viewed closer.

You can manually set the memory limit with this:

When you execute a PHP script it will output the result to the stream. So if you execute the PHP script by pointing your browser to where you have it housed your browser will display the output. On the other hand if you executed it through dos the output would be displayed in the dos window.

The error log is set up to report the most recent 300 errors, but many of the errors I get have to do with IP addresses I%26#039;ve blocked from my system (spam bots). I%26#039;d like to ignore these errors and only track those that are useful to me.
